A letter from Sydney!

At last! Sydney has got in touch — this letter and drawing from Sydney were sent to me by a very kind New Zealander, Steve Stokes.

Dearest Coral

As you will understand it is very difficult for me to pick up a pen and to write. I am very lucky as I have found a computer and by standing on the keys with one paw I am able to print letters.

I am very sorry, Coral, you always looked after me so well but sometimes I felt adventurous. The day you took me to see Captain Scott’s hut, you put me on a rock, I wanted to look around and climbed down and ran off. It was very naughty of me, so I deserved what happened next. I found myself all alone. You had gone, the helicopters had gone. I knew I was in for a long hard winter. Most of the first winter I spent in the hut, there was plenty of frozen food and I made a nest in Captain Scott’s sleeping bag.

Then this last summer I heard the helicopters coming. I ran down, taking a big risk as I ran past the skuas. People were getting off the helicopter, but no-one saw me get on. I had the whole aircraft to myself except for the pilot. When he landed next I recognised the Kapitan Khlebnikov straight away. I rushed off to the cabin we used to be in, but other people were in the cabin. It was so warm. I climbed into their suitcase and fell asleep. I must have been asleep for about two weeks. The next thing I knew was the case was being packed and I was still inside.

I eventually found a way out, which was a good thing. The case had a label on saying that it was going to Vladivostok. I had seen enough of the cold, I wanted to go somewhere warm. It was then I saw a case that was going to South Africa. That is how I ended up here.

I have a job as a dental hygienist in one of the game parks. At first I found I was very scared, especially those big cats. They had very bad teeth but since I have been brushing them twice a day they are much better.

I have just seen a New Zealand tourist going past. If I rush I will hide this in his bag and perhaps he will post it for me.

I hope you get this letter so that you will know I am all right and well. I will try to stamp out another letter soon.

Love
Sydney

To Coral,
I’m in a desert. I got here by a Tsunami. A nice surfer gave me a ride. Well, I think it was a surfer. I’m searching for water. I am being washed by a sandstorm.
I ran out and noticed a penguin running. It is getting bigger and I’m running faster. The penguin got caught in it. I heard someone say “cut”. I’m in a movie. I hope you see it.

Dear Coral,
I am having a ball at Magnetic island in Queensland , Australia.
I’m sitting under the shade of a palm tree at Elms Bay enjoying a wonderful ice-cream befor I go for a swim.
I,m quickly typing this letter on a tourists lap top. It’s ok though because they ‘ve gone for a swim and left it and the mango ice-cream behind.

I will come home soon, I promise I’ve just got to see a few places first. I’m thinking of swimming half of the way home and letting the sea drift me back the other half.

When I come back I can’t wait to tell you about all the cool places that ive been like Jamaica, France, Africa, Greece, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands, India, Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, New Zealand, Canada and all the rest of those amazing places.

See you soon love Sydney.

Dear Coral,
I heard about something called a circus in Hobart (Tasmania) and decided to come and see.

I’ve had enough of the big smelly teeth on big smelly cats. Anyway, their teeth are always worse every time.

I’m sorry that I haven’t got back to you yet but I’ve been having a ball at the circus. It’s so funny.

Anyway, in Hobart I heard about a school called Peregrine going to see you, Coral, you. So, as you probably guessed, I got all excited and ran as fast as I could.

But by the time I got there the big building (library)was closed. This was the saddest Monday of my life. I also found a poster that said: “REWARD FOR RETURN OF SYDNEY”. I went to the port and got on a ship called The Aurora Australis and headed for who knows where.

Dear Coral,
When you left me, the wind blew me to a rocket and the rocket took me to the moon. When I was on the moon I floated.

Good Luck From Sydney

Hi Coral,
I just snuck into someone’s suitcase and I’ve been taken on an aeroplane and landed in San Francisco a fortnight ago. Yesterday I went to the movies with a little girl. The movie was about a boy who was in a secret spy club and his parents abandonded him and so on. The other day I got left behind by a little boy and today I think we’re (me and the little girl) going to a drama play.
Hope I see you soon.

Hi Coral,
It is Sydney here. I am going to Australia to see some dolphins. An emperor penguin gave me a beanie, a jumper and a pair of pants to keep me warm. Tonight we ate fish and vegies. Sorry I have to go, the ship to Australia is going. Love you Bye Bye oooxxx

Hi Coral, I am still in Antarctica. It is freezing down here. How I got left here I am going to tell you. I was put on a rock and you took photos of that rock, then a big bird picked me up and flew off with me. As soon as you stopped looking at that rock and went back to the ship without me, the big bird was slowing down and it dropped me.
Luckily I was dropped in a soft pile of snow and I managed to climb out. I was lost. In the distance I could see the ice breaker but don’t worry because I met a friendly traveller. He picked me up and is taking me back to his base camp.

Dear Coral, I am still in Antarctica and I got a ride on a penguin today. It was so fun. I love going ice skating. I wish I could go home. I miss you a lot. I am trying to find a way to get back to you, but it ’s hard. I went to Scott’s Hut. It was fun. I had some food, it was yummy.
